LYNX to Offer Free Rides on Third Annual National Dump the Pump Day

On June 19 Central Floridians are Urged to Ride Public Transportation to Save Money and Save the Planet

ORLANDO, Fla. (June 10, 2008) – With high gas prices on everyone’s mind, the Central Florida Regional Transportation Authority (LYNX) announced today that it will join with other public transportation systems nationwide to participate in the third annual national Dump the Pump Day on June 19. Sponsored by the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), the 2008 National Dump the Pump Day is a day that encourages people to ride public transportation to save money, conserve gasoline and help reduce greenhouse gases.

“Using public transportation is the quickest way to beat high gas prices,” said LYNX CEO Linda S. Watson. “If gas prices are too high for you, then ‘dump the pump’ and ride LYNX for free on June 19.”

Households with two workers and one car that use public transportation save $6,200 every year, compared to a household with no access to public transportation.

According to a new study prepared by ICF International and titled Broadening the Connection between Public Transportation and Energy Conservation, public transportation reduces our nation’s carbon emissions by 37 million metric tons annually – equivalent to the electricity used by 4.9 million households.

“By participating in the third annual national Dump the Pump Day, we hope people who have never used LYNX will decide to give us a try instead of driving their car,” said Watson. “We will welcome new riders and thank our regular riders as we offer special services and benefits.”

LYNX, whose ridership is at an all-time high and up 7% year-to-date, has received proclamations for participating in the program from the City of Orlando, Orange County and Seminole County. At time of print, the elected officials expected to Dump the Pump are City of Orlando Council Members Daisy Lynum and Patty Sheehan.

Starting June 11 anyone looking to ride LYNX for free on Dump the Pump Day can print a ride coupon from www.golynx.com. A pre-printed coupon can be found in the Orlando Weekly (June 11), Orlando Times (June 12), Orlando Business Journal (June 13), El Sentinel (June 14) and the June 17 Orlando Sentinel (all five counties). Coupons will also be available for pickup at the Downtown Orlando Information Center, METROPLAN ORLANDO and East Side Cafe. The City of Orlando’s Downtown Ambassador Program will be passing out coupons throughout downtown streets. All coupons will only be valid on June 19, 2008.
