“There are risks and costs to a program of action. But they are far less than the long-range risks and costs of comfortable inaction.” – John F. Kennedy
Change. While some of us embrace change, most of us resist it. While I wish I could tell you that making positive change in your life is an easy and effortless process, that’s simply not the truth – especially when it comes to changing your body, your fitness and your health.
Making a positive change in these areas more often than not is a process that requires significant effort – effort, I might add, that is very often accompanied by pain. And who wants to deal with pain, right?
One of the most painful things about change is the fear of the unknown. I don’t know of any change that comes with a 100 percent guarantee of success – especially when it comes to fitness. In fact, I tell individuals who are looking for the right fitness solution for themselves to stay away from anyone or any program who claims to have a 100 percent success rate. No such program exists (including ours).
Why is this so? After all, if everything – and I mean everything – we do at Fitness Together has one thing in mind (our clients success), then why isn’t everyone successful at achieving the changes they desire? After years of being in this business and helping hundreds of clients, I believe it’s because change is hard.
That bears repeating – CHANGE IS HARD. But one trend always holds true: those who are the most successful at change are those who bring the greatest commitment to making the changes they need to make. They recognize that the risk and cost of not changing (not taking action) is far greater than taking the appropriate action to see the change they desire. They are committed to change and have the following operating in their life:
They Have the Right Support Systems in Place
When we think of support systems, we often think of individuals or groups that are there to support us in our endeavors. That’s valuable for sure (see tip #2), but here I am speaking more to the systems you need in place to achieve the change you desire. For example, if you desire to change how you look and feel, then the specific exercise and nutrition systems you will utilize to achieve your goals are examples of support systems that need to be in place.
They Surround Themselves with People Who Affirm Who They Are
Surround yourself with people who have your best interests at heart. You need to cultivate relationships with individuals who truly value you for not only who you are, but for whom you are becoming.
They Are Patient.
Lasting change takes time. Realizing that change will not occur overnight helps them to set achievable goals and keep realistic expectations in check. Not only does this help them day-to-day, but it also puts them on the right path to maintain the changes they achieved when it’s all said and done.
They Resist Frustration
Change is a process and, at times, it can be a frustrating one. If you remember that change is not about being “perfect,” so much as it’s about making progress, you’ll be less likely to become frustrated when challenges and setbacks come along (and they will).
The choices are yours. But, remember, the results are yours, too.
