Steer clear of the airports, the highways and the empty bank account by planning your vacation right here in East Orlando. Sure, it’s nice to travel and to see new things, but one of the wonderful things about living in such a highly traveled city is the plethora of activities for you and your family to take advantage of right in your own backyard. Looking for fun? East Orlando has you covered. From feeding gators while you mini-golf across Congo River Golf’s 18-whole course to the all in one family-fun experience at Firkin and Kegler, it’s doubtful you’ll ever find yourself at a loss of things to do on your staycation.

A short travel on East Colonial Drive to Congo River Golf and you and your family can put-put to your heart’s content.

Firkin and Kegler is just one of the many family friendly destinations for East Orlando residents to staycation in the summer.

Firkin and Kegler is just one of the many family friendly destinations for East Orlando residents to staycation in the summer.

“You can feed alligators and enjoy a fun trip the the African Congo complete with waterfalls while you golf,” says Desiree Matos, assistant manager of Congo River Golf. “Our facilities were voted the number one mini-golf destination in Orlando again this year, so it’s obviously a lot of fun.” When you’re done with the 18 holes, you can take a moment to enjoy the arcade or try their newest attraction, the mining experience where you can pan for genuine gemstones.

Mini-golf not your forte? If you prefer to work on your back swing then the golf simulator at Firkin and Kegler might be more suited for you - or maybe bowling strikes your interest, or how about an arcade, sports lounge, pub and eatery and nightclub all under the same roof ? “There is nothing else like Firkins in town,” says Brent Baldasare, partner with Firkin and Kegler. “Our signature décor and billboard size HD-TVs separate us as the premiere bowling and entertainment center in the city. It’s a perfect place for parents to bring their kids to get out of the heat.”
Looking to really escape from the heat and take a break from reality? Then grab your ticket to an IMAX showing at Regal Cinemas in the Waterford Lakes Town Center. With intense digital surround sound and larger than life screens it’s not just a movie, it’s an experience. “There is just nothing like the IMAX experience when you’re watching a movie,” says Irvin Molina, an East Orlando resident. “You’ll never be able to go to a regular movie afterward, I’m glad there’s finally one on this side of town.”

Not everyday can be a walk in the park, but one of the wonderful wonders of summer living is that a lot of days can be. Whether you rent out a canoe at Moss or at Blanchard Park, be sure to check out the completely covered kids playground. Pack up a picnic, go for a bike ride on the Little Econ trail or head over to the multi-purpose fields where there is plenty of room for kick ball, kite flying or just throwing around the old pigskin around while you’re enjoying fun in the sun.

Kids are not the only ones who need some time off, fortunately there are many activities suited for adults and their needs as well. For a soothing massage, Massage Envy, located in Waterford Lakes Plaza is a wonderful escape from the tension and stress that everyday life can bring. “We want you to walk away feeling nothing,” says Jonathan Schwartz, owner of the Massage Envy location in Waterford. “All the stress is gone. We strive to offer the spa-level massage treatment at a price that is affordable to the masses.” As we come into the summer months, and it’s time to take a break from it all, East Orlando has our wants and needs within reach. If you’re looking for the ultimate staycation experience, isn’t nice to know you don’t have to look very far?
