Leadership in East Orlando

When I was initially asked to take part in the inaugural class of the Leadership In Action program for the East Orlando Chamber of Commerce, I jumped at the chance. The class of 19 came from banking, healthcare, the law, education, real estate, and small business. We met eight times between November and May.Leadership%20photo.JPG

Our very first meeting as a class last November was eye-opening. Being new to Insight, and thus to the Chamber, I only knew a few of the others in the room. That soon changed, as we discussed the results of our personality profiles. After getting to quickly know each other’s likes, dislikes and quirks, we got an overview of the history and issues in Orlando, specifically as they relate to the East and Southeast regions. We then were given a “team-building” exercise of cooking a full dinner for 30 people using non-related food items and gas grills. It was comical, and certainly brought us together.

SHOOTING STAR FOUND IN ORLANDO

It’s not everyday that a fresh, new neighborhood face is cast as the lead role in a soon to be box-office hit movie. But, the day did come for 15-year-old Lexi Johnson of southeast Orlando. Well, actually, the fateful day occurred after years of hard work. At three years old, her big break was being runner-up in a national Kid’s Search competition. That led to a five-year contract with Wilhelmina Models of New York, shooting national commercials for well-known brands.

Kid Fit Challenge 2008

Insight Magazine is hosting Kid Fit Challenge 2008 on February 9th at the Lake Nona YMCA to encourage children and their families to exercise together, combat childhood obesity and hopefully to set the world’s record for the most number of children in an aerobics class.

Building Breaks Ground in Avalon Park

There weren’t enough shovels for everyone who wanted to start digging at the ground-breaking ceremony for the Keith A Ewing Medical Office Building in Avalon Park. The nineteen instrumental players in bringing this project to fruition shared the eight available shovels, but that didn’t dampen their enthusiasm for breaking new ground on this ground-breaking building.

The Future of Orange County: Goals of Government

As the great inventor, Charles Kettering once said, “My interest is in the future because I am going to spend the rest of my life there.” As we turn the corner and leave 2007 behind, there is much to look forward to in Orange County. East Orlando has an exciting future on the horizon with new roadways, new development, new industries, and environment saving initiatives, all coming to town at the same time.
