Chamber Hires New Marketing Director

Get to know Erika Spence, the new director of marketing and special events for the East Orlando Chamber of Commerce.

Why were you attracted to the East Orlando Chamber of Commerce?

I first learned about the Chamber several years ago when I was looking for an organization to volunteer with. My criteria was simple; I was looking for an organization that was close to home, inviting to newcomers and making a positive impact on the area. I joined several committees right off the bat and helped with the first-ever BlueCross BlueShield of Florida Chili Cook-off at Taste of Orlando in 2005. In 2006, I was elected to the Board of Directors for the Chamber and created a new communications committee that helped promote upcoming events, Chamber news and redesigned the Web site.

What kinds of work experiences have you had prior to the Chamber?

I’ve worked as a program director at a summer camp organizing a staff of 30 and coordinating activities for 150 youth and adults – talk about a special event every day of the week! I’ve also put my keen eye for detail to work as a project manager at Kinko’s. But most recently, I worked in public relations for MPB Communications, a local full-service communications agency, where I spent my days writing, researching, performing media relations activities and coordinating a variety of special events.

Do you have a favorite task that’s part of your new job?

I don’t think I can pick just one aspect of my new job that I enjoy the most. I really enjoy meeting our diverse group of members and learning about the innovative projects they are working on. I love to stretch my creative brain muscles, so be on the look out for great new flyers, Web site content, newsletter formats and much, much more! And there’s my favorite pastime, writing. Oh, to close the door to my office and let my fingers dance across the keyboard – that’s heaven.

What have you already accomplished in your first month as the director of marketing and special events?

Instead of presenting our members with plaques to recognize their achievements or contributions to the Chamber and the community, I’ve implemented a Certificate of Greatness. This will be presented to member companies and individuals who are helping the Chamber fulfill its mission of taking East Orlando from great to greatness. The certificates will be presented for Businesses of Month, Volunteers of the Month and whenever circumstances of greatness present themselves.

What is the coolest event happening at the Chamber right now?

Right now we’re in the home stretch for our 23rd annual golf tournament, which is always a hit. The next two events on my plate are the second installment of the Vision Series for 2007 and East Orlando Celebrates Education Day. On October 10th, we’ll be discussing the latest news surrounding three quality of life issues: education, housing and recreation for our Visioning Breakfast. That same week, on Saturday, October 13, our local schools will showcase their academic abilities and extra-curricular talents in a fun-filled event at Waterford Lakes Town Center.

Is there anything else you’d like to add about yourself?

I am a proud alumnus of the University of Central Florida and can’t wait for the first home game at Bright House Networks Stadium – GO KNIGHTS! My husband and I just bought our first home and our new favorite hangout is Lowe’s. And, in my spare time, I am a youth leader at Spirit of Joy Lutheran Church, where I enjoy molding the minds of middle and high school students.
